The Opportunity

Kupferberg Center for the Arts (KCA) seeks a resourceful, self-motivated, and experienced Theater & Venue Operations Manager who will ensure professional, safe, and effective operations of KCA’s venues in accordance with its mission, which is to provide high-quality accessible and affordable cultural attractions to the Queens College community and the borough’s 2.4 million residents.

The largest multi-disciplinary arts entity in the borough of Queens, KCA features world-class artists and performances at its main stage campus venues, and showcases the talents of emerging and regional artists in off-site, neighborhood settings. The Theatre & Venue Operations Manager will report to the Director of KCA, and will be directly responsible for leading daily operations of KCA, including the operations of the venue front-of-house as well as facilities operations for the organization.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

● Recruits hires, trains, supervises, motivates, and supports front-of-house staff, including ushers, ticket takers, custodial, security, and other key staffing duties as they arise.

● Creates and maintains work schedules, roles and responsibilities, and training protocols for front-of-house staff, ensuring smooth event operations.

● Trains front-of-house staff on safety procedures and ensures the venue is prepared appropriately for public audiences. Ensures all systems and procedures for safety are adhered to.

● Ensures front-of-house staff receive appropriate training for essential functions such as customer service, public safety, and business operations.

● Acts as lead contact with Queens College Departments of Buildings and Grounds, Public Safety, and others as determined by the Director of KCA.

● Works closely with KCA Venue Sales Director and with Rental Clients to design customized operations plans for their events, applying KCA policies and guidelines as warranted

● Oversees routine facility maintenance, maintains an annual calendar of service appointments, works with other programming departments to avoid scheduling conflicts between event dates and maintenance periods.

● Ensures effective and efficient daily operations of KCA’s facilities.

● Provide support to front-of-house staff on event days, whether in person or remote.

● Working with front-of-house and back-of-house teams to ensure cohesive event production and delivery of services; collaborating as needed with other departments across the campus community.

● Creating and maintaining tracking systems to ensure effective facilities operations.

● Establishes and maintains relationships with essential service providers to KCA, including facilities and maintenance vendors and consultants on an as-needed basis.

● Leads the onboarding process for all KCA hires under the supervision of this position.


Experience and Qualifications

● At least 7 years’ experience in live venue operations, or other related field, particularly in the cultural sector.

● The ability to work a flexible schedule dictated by the events calendar, including evenings, holidays and weekends as required.

● Personable team player with an eye for detail.

● Strong management and communication skills.

● Excellent organizational skills, with an ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.

● A general understanding of theatrical systems and technologies, as well as venue operations.

● Experience recruiting and supervising and retaining a seasonal workforce.

Compensation

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and prevailing salary range for similar positions within the non-profit performing arts industry. This position is eligible for benefits including medical/dental/vision insurance, a 401k plan, and paid time off.

SALARY

$70,000.00 – $80,000.00 per year
