DESCRIPTION
The Old Globe, a year-round professional theatre company producing 14 or more productions annually on three stages in beautiful Balboa Park in San Diego, seeks candidates a Firsthand/Assistant Cutter to join our talented Costume Department.
The Firsthand/Assistant Cutter reports to the Costume Director and works closely with the Draper and stitchers to create assigned costumes for the Globe Productions. The position requires extensive knowledge in clothing construction with an emphasis on both historical and costume production. The position cuts patterns, works with the Draper to determine the best construction techniques, and directs stitchers on the process for each garment. The Firsthand/Assistant Cutter attends fittings as requested, handles assigning stitchers alterations and projects, and follows progress of each garment through completion. The position also participates in general shop maintenance, as well as participating in storage maintenance, restocking, and other tasks as assigned.
The successful candidate will have 2-4 years’ experience in a professional theater costume department. Candidates need a strong knowledge of clothing, both contemporary and historical, plus an understanding of fabrics and how they behave. Must be able to communicate in a professional manner with designers, actors, and all members of the costume team.
This position is full-time hourly Local 122 IATSE position, with occasional overtime. The hourly rate is $27.82. If the selected candidate is not a member of the Union, they will be required to join. The work week is Tuesday through Saturday. Bilingual English/Spanish speaking is a plus and multilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
