DESCRIPTION
Gemini Music Company is seeking an experienced Musical Theater Director for a non-union workshop of a new production entitled "My Father's Play" to rehearse at the SoHo Playhouse in lower Manhattan for February 2025 culminating in workshop presentations of the show on March 3 & 4, 2025.
My Father's Play follows Paul, an accountant in his early 70s, who has an ambition to write a musical show. After his mother passes away, he is packing up her apartment and finds a box of family memorabilia. This includes a script of a play, “For Women Must Work”, written 50 years before by his father, a businessman who died shortly after the play was produced. The Play is about women in an office and focuses on the stresses working women face balancing their careers and home lives that still holds true today.
Paul always admired his father who loved Shakespearian theater, acting, and singing. But, Paul could never get close to his father who was constantly putting him down due to their generational differences. Paul decides to revive and revise the play to perpetuate his father’s legacy, but he turns the play into a musical, writing 21 original songs and giving the story an expanded plot with a central protagonist. His father’s spirit appears and is outraged by the changes Paul is making. As Paul works through the show, watched over by his dad, they reconnect and build their relationship, which becomes intertwined with the plot and the characters in the play. Finally, Paul develops a new understanding of his father which he did not have during his lifetime, and why his dad wrote the play
