DESCRIPTION
The Stevens Dramatic Society at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey is seeking a Director, Production Manager, Stage Manager, Music Director, Choreographer, and Set Designer for its Spring 2025 production of Into the Woods. The Stevens Dramatic Society is an entirely student-run society with a full cast and Production Board of full-time college students. We are in search of individuals who can work with tight student schedules, budget constraints, and who are able to work well with students who pursue theatre mainly as a hobby.
Director
The position of Director entails: running auditions and callbacks, casting the production in collaboration with the Producer, Music Director, and Choreographer, working with the Stage Manager to schedule rehearsals, attending weekly Production Board meetings, collaborating with the Producer and Production Board to set the overall concept and look of the production, conducting rehearsals, educating and training an Assistant Director, and making best effort to be present at performances of the production. It is desired that our Director comes in with a strong vision to make our production of Into the Woods stand out.
Stage Manager
The position of Stage Manager entails: being present at auditions and callbacks, coordinating and scheduling rehearsals with the Director, being present at all rehearsals, calling cues during performances, recording blocking, disseminating information to and from the cast, educating and training a student Assistant Stage Manager, producing a report of all rehearsals and performances, conducting a paper tech, and more. Rehearsal reports must be clean, concise, and understandable, and there must be a strong desire to encourage learning of the student stage manager.
Production Manager
The position of Production Manager entails: working with the Producer to schedule, attend, and lead all Production Board meetings and crew calls, organizing Load In and Load Out of the theater, advising Production Board members and providing support where needed, helping to maintain one cohesive vision throughout the production, and more. For this production specifically, extensive knowledge of lighting design is preferred, as well as a willingness to mentor student designers on the lighting team.
Music Director
The position of Music Director entails: running vocal rehearsals, coaching the cast on musical numbers to ensure strong and dynamic vocal performances, collaborating with the Director and Choreographer to integrate musical staging, attending key rehearsals and all performances, working with the student orchestra, and providing individual or small group vocal coaching as needed. It is essential that the Music Director has strong vocal coaching skills to guide and develop the student performers.
Choreographer
The position of Choreographer entails: designing, teaching, and rehearsing all dance and movement sequences in collaboration with the Director and Music Director, working with cast members of varying dance experience, and being present at all performances. The Choreographer should also be capable of training an Assistant Choreographer and supporting students as they learn choreography.
Set Designer
The position of Set Designer entails: designing and creating a set that supports the overall vision of the production, overseeing the Load In and Load Out process, and collaborating closely with the Production Manager and student crew to facilitate set construction. The Set Designer should be willing to mentor and teach students throughout the set-building process and guide them on the safe and effective use of tools and materials.
All positions are required to work closely with the student Producer of the show to address any and all matters.
Production Timeline
Auditions will be held Thursday, January 23rd and Friday, January 24th from 7-11pm, callbacks will be held Sunday, January 26th from 6-9pm, and rehearsals will begin the week of Monday, January 27th (dates/times are tentative and subject to change). Weekly rehearsals will be held Monday-Thursday 8pm-11pm and Saturdays 10am-2pm. Our performance dates are April 3rd, 4th and 5th.
